Get Your Marketing Message Across on Your Website

If you have a company website, it’s likely not for your health. You’re likely pouring time, money, and effort into that site to get a marketing message across. While the Internet may be a great place to promote your business, though, make sure that you are following these tips (without them, your website effort may be all for nothing):

1) You need a marketing message. Seems pretty obvious, but look around at a few company websites asking yourself “what is the marketing message here?” and you will realize that many businesses do not have a clear idea of the message they want their company website to send. Before you start working on your website, come up with one clear marketing message – no longer than one sentence. Write it down on an index card and refer to it often. As you look at possible pages to include on your website or review possible content to include, ask yourself “does this part of the website promote my message?” If the answer is no, leave that part of your website out.

2) Don’t make it all about your message. Some websites are so eager to share their marketing message that they scream it out in huge headlines. The problem is that viewers are not coming to your site to read your marketing message. They have a problem that needs to be solved or they are looking for information. As a result, the last thing you want to do is to simply write out your marketing message from your index card to every page of your website. Instead, transform your marketing message into a customer-driven message. For example, let’s say that your marketing message is “Buy our boats online now.” Rather than just writing that out, why not address some of the problems customers have with buying boats and then use your marketing message to solve those problems. Good examples include: “Do you have trouble finding the quality boats you want in dealerships? Buy our boats online now and get incredible selection at unbeatable prices” or “Buying boats that always need fixing? Buy our boats online now – the come with a hassle-free warranty that the dealershops just can’t beat.”

3) State your message. Again, it seems obvious, but many businesses overlook this. If you want your viewers to call you, make sure that you indicate “call us now,” if you want your customers to order online, be sure to remind them to “buy online now.”

4) Repeat your message in different ways. Don’t just keep telling viewers “call us now” and “call us now.” Come up with different ways to say the same thing – “contact us today” or “our friendly team members are standing by to take your call now” – or your copy will get stale.
